Sundaramurti Nayanar - Part VI - Paravai Kadalar (The Lover of Paravai)

The advent of spring, with the breeze from the south brought to mind memories of the Lord of Tiruvarur and Sundarar was desirous to salute the Lord who dances beautifully among His devotees in Tiruvarur at the time of the spring festival. Sundarar sang immersing himself in the thoughts of the Lord at Tiruvarur, "How long can I stay forgetful of my very life – my Lord of Arur?" Saluting the Lord at Tiruvotriyur, he left for Tiruvarur. As he broke the promise made to Sangiliyar in the presence of the Lord, he lost his eye-sight and struggled to find his way. Anguished at breaking the trust of Sangiliyar and pleading with the Lord for mercy, with his undying devotion to the Lord of Tiruvarur, he proceeded. He worshiped the Lord for Grace at Tirumullaivayil. Then the Lord at Venpakkam gave him a staff as a support and reassured him - "I am with you, Proceed!" He bowed down to the Lord at Pazhaiyanur, Tiruvalangadu, Tiruvural and reached Kanchi.

Prostrating at Tirukamakkottam, with the help of the devotees, he entered Tiruekambam. He fell down and saluted the Supreme besieging that He grant him eye-sight to see that beautiful form of the Lord. The Lord, pleased with his devotion, returned sight to his left eye. The ecstatic devotee rejoiced at seeing the Lord of Tiruekambam and sang about it in a devaram. He paid his obeisance to the Lord at Tiruvamathur and crossed the border of the Tondai lands. He praised the Supreme at Tiruarathurai, Tiruvavaduthurai and Tiruthuruthi. Singing about the Lord at many other shrines on the way he reached the Lord's own town Tiruvarur where his mind dwelled. Saluting at the shrines of the Lord in that holy town, Vantondar reached the abode of the Lord. Weeping and lamenting, he sang his heart out to the One and only, starting “miladimai” stating thus, "Oh Lord! We have submitted ourselves as bonded servitors to Thee! Yet when You do not act when we are in distress, Oh Lord! where do we turn to!" The perennial fountain of Mercy returned the sight of his right eye also. Sundarar with gratitude, bowed down many times in devotion.

Paravaiyar was irked when she came to know about Arurar's wedding with Sangiliyar. The people who accompanied Sundarar through his pilgrimage, were denied entry to his house when they returned to Tiruvarur. They immediately reported this to Sundarar. He sent the wise people of the town to cool her ire, but they were sent back by Paravaiyar. Anxious, Nambiyarurar could not sleep, he prayed to God again to solve his problem. The Lord instantly set His Holy Feet on the town of Arur at that late hour. Thrilled, Nayanar felt privileged by His presence and saluted Him. He requested the Lord to solve the problem between him and Paravaiyar. The Lord, whose holy Feet were not seen even by Brahma and Vishnu, went to Paravaiyar’s home, walking through the streets of Tiruvarur accompanied by the bhuta gana, siddha-s and Devas. The Lord went in the guise of an old devotee to Paravaiyar's house. Surprised at the visit of a devotee that late in the night, she greeted Him. The Lord conveyed His purpose of visit, asking her to reconcile with Sundarar. But Paravaiyar refused to accept. The Lord, wanting to continue the play, returned to Sundarar to convey her refusal.

Arurar, tensed about the reply, saw the Lord coming with a smile but his message was disappointing. He begged the Lord to settle their discord. The Lord went again to Paravaiyar's house, this time as Himself and asked her to accept Sundarar. She realised that even the old messenger was the Lord in disguise. With folded hands, she bowed to the Lord’s words! The Lord blessed her devotion and returned to Sundarar with the affirmative message. Thanking the Lord, at the first rays of dawn, Arurar left for the house of Paravaiyar. Paravaiyar received him with her heart brimming with love. They lived in the town of Tiruvarur, praising the Peerless Lord.

sundarar Eyarkon Kalikkamar

Eyarkon Kalikkama Nayanar, another great beloved devotee of the Lord, was appalled at the deed of Sundarar to send the Supreme Lord of the Universe as an emissary to settle a marital discord. Immersed in the ocean of love for the Almighty, he lamented, "What kind of servitor is he who commands the Master to run messages to a lady!" The Great Lord who knew the real affection and service of Sundarar towards Him and His devotees wanted to make Kalikkamar Sundarar’s ally. Kalikkamar was struck by soolai (a terrible stomach pain) which he was told could be cured only by Vantondar. The Lord commanded Vantondar to cure Kalikkamar’s illness. Sundarar rushed to Eyarkon's house. Eyarkon felt the very thought of Sundarar curing him more agonising than the soolai itself. Averse to getting cured by him, Kalikkamar killed himself with a sword. Sundarar arrived at his house. A marvellous devotee in her own right, Eyarkon's wife hid his body and concealed her sorrow to welcome Sundarar as if nothing happened. But as soon as Sundarar learnt about the shocking event, he took the sword to cut himself down too. Then by the Grace of the Lord, Eyarkon came back to life and held back the hands of Sundarar. They saluted each other out of love. The two gems of devotion became very good friends and saluted the Lord at Tiruppunkur and Tiruvarur.
