Surrounded by fields where the heaps of bananas appear to be lying on sheets of green leaves, is the town of Perumizhalai in the kingdom of Mizhalai. The town was bounteous with people whose knowledge of the Truth brought chastity to their hearts, which was only the reflection of the white Holy Ash on their foreheads. The head of the town Perumizhalai Kurumbanar, was not only the foremost devotee but also the chief servitor of the servitors of the Lord with matted locks. The man of laudable wisdom utilized his knowledge in serving the servitors of the Serpent clad Shankara even when they did not explicitly ask for it. He was always looking forward to serving the Lord’s devotees and sought the pleasure of service considering it as his prime duty. The feet of the Lord, softer than the petals of a rose, resided in the lotus of his heart spreading the fragrance of his love.
Perumizhalai Kurumba Nayanar’s personality had many admirable characteristics. He hosted many devotees of the Lord with the dreadful axe, providing them unlimited food and wealth. Yet, he was humble and pleasant to those unattached devotees. The unswerving selfless service introduced him to the great devotee who asked everything only to God, Sundaramurti Nayanar. Knowing that it is the association with great beings that paves the way to liberation, he held that peerless devotee in his thoughts whose own thoughts always revolved around Parameshwara. Following that splendid devotee, he attained the eight great powers. But, for him above all those powers was meditating on the peerless Holy five letters with the tears of joy rolling down with immense devotion. His love for the Lord, yoga and service continued unhindered.
Meanwhile, the servitor of the Lord, Sundaramurti Nayanar went to the capital of the Chera kingdom, Kodungolur, ruled by Cheraman Perumal Nayanar. Sundarar, by the splendid blessings of the Lord of Tiruvanychaikkalam, was sent the white elephant to make his way to the Lord's abode Kailash. The great Perumizhalai Kurumba Nayanar, who had remarkable spiritual vision and wisdom felt this great event in his heart. When his beloved Sundarar was proceeding to Kailash, he did not want to be left behind on the earth. He was eager to reach that blissful place on that day itself by his yogic prowess. With the four internal instruments (Antahkaranas) coming together in absoluteness of knowledge, the air (prana) flowing strictly in the brahma nadi to the centre of the skull, with the secret aperture opening there, the Nayanar left his mortal coil and reached Kailash, before Sundarar, to reside at the Eternal feet of Lord Shiva. Let the splendid yogic wisdom of the Perumizhalai Kurumba Nayanar, got by serving the Lord and His devotees stay in the mind.
