The History of Kutruva Nayanar

Crushing enemies on the battlefield with courage, being successful in all endeavours, being courteous to the devotees of the Great Lord and enshrining the feet of the Lord with matted hair always in his heart were only some of the great qualities of the devotee Kalandai Kon Kutruvar.

Kootruva Nayanar - The History of Kootruva NayanarKutruvar won many battles as boons for his service to the Lord and His devotees. His valour won him vast territory and wealth. He was the master of the most powerful kinds of armies - squads of elephants, speeding horses, strong chariots and specialised soldiers. When he approached the priests of Chidambaram (Tillaivazh Andanar) for his coronation, they refused saying, "Except for the emperors of the Chozha dynasty, we cannot perform that ceremony for anyone else". So, he moved to the mountain state of Cheralam (Kerala) leaving his crown with some of the priests of Tillai.

Kutruvar felt sad at his failure to get coronated by the priests of Tillai. He prayed to Lord Nataraja to place His Feet as a crown on his head. The easily pleased God appeared in the dream of Kutruvar and gladdened him by placing His peerless feet on his head. Kutruvar got the coveted coronation! Instead of getting crowned by the priests of Tillai, he got coronated by the Great God whose feet are venerated by those very priests of Tillai!! His tremendous wealth served its true objective of being spent on the worship of the Lord. While money spent on material things never returns, the wealth used by Kutruvar out of his love for the Lord, brought him the greatest of all treasures – a blissful place at the feet of God. Let the love and service of Kutruvar which blessed him with the feet of the Lord as his crown stay in the mind.
