The Puranam of Satthi Nayanar

(satthi nAyanAr purANam - Periyapuranam as English poetry)

        "I am servitor of the servitors of Satthi
        Of heroic anklet, the Prince of Varinjaiyoor."

                        - The Tiru-th-Tonda-th-Tokai.

1.     Varinjaiyoor is in the Cauvery realm of the Cholas
    Who by the puissance of their sole sceptre, erected
    Columns of victory in all the eight directions and reigned;
    In this city from the stalks of lotuses weeded out
    By farmers, honey streamed forth and filled the tanks.        (4039)

2.     In the truthful clan of Velaalas of Varanjaiyoor
    He came to be born to invest it with greater glory;
    He was a servitor unto the ankleted and redemptive
    Feet of the Lord who could not be comprehended
    By Brahma and other Devas.                    (4040)

3.     He was endowed with the valiancy to pull out
    The tongue of him who, in this world, slandered the servitors
    Of the Heavenly Father, and slice it away;
    He was called Satthiyaar.                    (4041)

                                                Satthi Nayanar - The Puranam of Satthi Nayanar

4.     He would forcibly pull out with tongs the tongues
    Of blasphemous sinners and cut them away
    With sharp knives; thus he  flourished loftily
    In the way of loving servitorship.                (4042)

5.     Poised in such manly and divine servitorship
    He served, in love his cause for many many days
    In this ever-during world; thus, even thus,
    He performed the redemptive servitorship
    For the river-crested Lord.                    (4043)

6.     He, the heroic and divine serviteur, performed
    This true service, freed from doubt; thus he reached
    The holy shade cast by the feet of the Lord of the Ambalam
    Who dances for the deliverance of the world.            (4044)

7.     Bowing at the feet of Satthiyaar who would slice away
    To tongues of those that did not speak well
    Of the Lord’s servitors, we would now describe the glory
    Of Aiyatikal, the holy Kaatavar of great tapas.            (4045)
