I am protected by Anandeshvarena, and hence am of the nature of eternal joy,

and of the form of supreme bliss, Brahman.

The Lord of the form of Guruguha, who bestows knowledge, He is knowledge

which is eternal bliss and is self-luminous.

He is beyond the three stages of bodies and eternal existence: gross, subtle,

and causal. He is the witness to the three states: waking, dreaming, and deep

sleep. He is pure. He transcends the five Kosas constituting the world, as well as

the three types of miseries. He is knowledge. He is Shiva, who is of the form of

Sat Cit Ananda, existence knowledge bliss, and is free. Hearing, thinking, meditating

on Him with concentration, one will have the experience of directly visualizing Him

within oneself. He is Maheshvara, the effulgent one.

I offer my prayers to Lord Arddhanarishvara incessantly. He is surrounded

by a host of eminent sages, such as Atri, Bhrigu, and Vasishta.

He has the glory of being exceptionally decorated during the time of

Arddha Jama worship. He delights Arddhanarishvari. He is Shiva, offering

refuge to his devotees.

He is adorned with the precious gem Nagendramani, and is mounted upon

the sacred bull. He is worshipped by the prosperous Guruguha, and is extolled

by the melody of Kumudakriya. He is praised by all the Agamas, and is

proclaimed by all the Vedas. He is venerated by Indra and others, and his

form shines with the red hue.

I always contemplate upon Lord Arunachalanatha, who is in the company of

Apitakuchamba.

His lotus feet bestow total salvation, even from just remembering them. He

is knowledge and bliss, shining like crores of suns. He is the embodiment of

sentiments such as mercy, etc. A host of celestials has sought refuge in Him.

He is of the form of extraordinarily lustrous Linga, and holds a marvellous

deer in His hand. He is like the bee hovering over the lotus-like Aparna-Parvati.

He is seated on a majestic bull. He especially dwells in the hearts of noble

Bhusuras. He is very much attached to brave Guruguha. He wears Ganga on

His glorious head, and has conquered the moon, the sun and the fire with His

natural brilliance.

I worship the Lord of the Universe

Who wears in his heart the garland of ragas which have taken the

form of the 14 worlds

for those who take refuge in Him

And who destroys the mental fear arising from the three afflictions[2],

such as adhyatmika and others

(I worship Him) Lord of Vishalakshi-gauri[3]

Who as Lord of white hue[4] is pure existence, consciousness and

bliss[5], in both His manifested and unmanifested forms[6]

(I worship Him) Who illuminates this varied and wonderful world

which is but a drama

Who radiance is like an infinite number of Suns and Moons which

illuminate this eternally changing world

(I worship Him) The white-limbed Shiva who is worshipped by

Govinda[7]

Whose body is besmeared with holy ashes surpassing that of milk,

jasmine, the Moon, camphor, etc.

Who by the five-fold combinations of the elements[9] forms the

plurality of the phenomenal world

Who is a combination of the forms of Brahma, Vishnu and

Rudra[10]

Who is fearless and untouched by the five senses[11]

Who alone is capable of giving unsurpassed joy

Who is the most auspicious and without peer, the slayer of

Smara[13]

Who always makes his abode in hearts filled with compassion and

feeling

(I worship Him) As Sadashiva[14] who is worshipped by the saman

music[15]

With its seven constituent forms, prakritis[16], etc.

(I worship Him) Who is only of blissful form, and who is known

by those with tender hearts

Who is known by those with tender hearts and who are devoid of

lust, anger and other vices[17]

(I worship Him) As Bhairava[18] who dwells in the void of the

consciousness and who has destroyed the cities[19]

And Bhairava with his trident who holds the skull of Brahma[20]

and destroys the cities

(I worship Him) Who holds the saranga and who dances in our

inner consciousness[21]

Who holds the saranga created by the ascetics of Daruka forest[22]

(I worship Him) Always, Who is bedecked with auspicious

ornaments

Who is the bestower of all our desires, whose auspicious ornaments

are embedded with emeralds of the finest hue

(I worship Him) Whose lotus-foot gives moksa[23]

Whose lotus-foot is extremely capable of conferring all

purusarthas[24]

(I worship Him) Who revels in the activities of the munificent

gods

dissolution and the conferring of divine grace[25]

(I worship Him) Who is the protector of Vaidyalinga

Southwest of Sripura there is a place called Gartatira

Who is the Lord of Guha[27], the Gods and Kings

Who has ordained the movements of the planets, such as Mars,

Mercury

Who is the bestower of gifts, whose eyes are Fire, Sun and Moon

Whose face is like the lotus and the Moon[28]

Who is the highest bliss, and who performs the dance of ecstasy[29]

Who purifies the downtrodden and Who banishes pride

Who is the Supremest Being and Who overrules our minds

Who generates the 4 phases of speech, vak, apra, etc.[30]

Notes:

  1. Belief in the transmigration of souls which wander through
  2. innumerable births and deaths seeking life's ultimate goal, moksa
  3. (liberation)

  1. ref. to the three kinds of pain; "These are: (1) the
  2. intrinsic (adhyatmika), (2) the extrinsic (adibhautika), and (3)
  3. the divine or superhuman (adhidaivika).  Of these, the intrinsic
  4. is two-fold, bodily and mental.  Bodily pain is caused by the
  5. disorder of the several humours, wind, bile, and phlegm; and mental
  6. pain is due to desire, wrath, avarice, affection, fear, envy, grief,
  7. and the non-perception of particular objects....  The extrinsic
  8. are caused by men, beasts, birds, reptiles, and inanimate things;
  9. and the superhuman ones are due to the evil influence of planets
  10. and the various spirits." [Samkhya-Karika, see Radhakrishnan,
  11. 1957]

  1. ref. to Shiva's consort Parvati, 'the fair one with large
  2. eyes'

  1. Shiva's body is covered with white ashes derived from having
  2. vanquished Kama, the God of desire, with his eye of fire.

  1. ref. to 'the three attributes of Brahman' in Vedanta philosophy:
  2. sat (existence), cit (consciousness), and ananda (bliss).  Each of
  3. these is treated separately in the carana section: sat appears in
  4. the lalita raga, cit in the saranga raga, and ananda in saranga of
  5. the viloma section.

  1. ref. to the 'dual aspect' of Brahman, the ultimate source from
  2. which all gods and creatures eminate.  Muttusvami Dikshitar was a
  3. follower of the smarta-Brahman tradition (those who do worship
  4. based on smrti) which "while believing in the fundamental
  5. truth of advaita (non-duality) and nirguna-Brahman (the non-corporeal
  6. form of Brahman), accepted also the saguna-Brahman the corporeal
  7. form as manifested in a number of deity forms.  These were intended
  8. to afford suitable means or supports for worship for men with a
  9. diversity of equipment and disposition." [V. Raghavan, 1975]
  10. For smarta Brahmans one of the five deities may be selected by a
  11. family as the principle deity for home worship: Surya, Shiva, Devi
  12. (the Goddess), Vishnu, or Ganesha (the son of Shiva having the head
  13. of an elephant).

  1. The 'cow finder'; a name given to Krishna when he saved the
  2. people and cows of Ambadi

  1. The pen name of Muttusvami Dikshitar

  1. ref. to the five primordial elements: prthvi (earth), ap (water),
  2. tojas (heat/light), vayu (air) and akasha (ether, the subtle and
  3. ethereal substance pervading the whole universe) [Aitreya Upanishad
  4. III.5.3]

  1. (lit. 'formidable') The name of Shiva as one of the trinity
  2. (trimurti)

  1. "Devoid of sound, touch, sight, taste or smell, with
  2. neither beginning nor end, Brahman is imperishable." [Katha
  3. Upanishad III.15]

  1.

  1. Alternate name for Kama

  1. 'everlasting' or 'eternal' Shiva; one of the five aspects of
  2. parama-Shiva ('highest Shiva'); see [25]

  1. Chants of the Samaveda, the most sacred of all music

  1. prakriti (lit 'primary substance', 'original') constitutes the
  2. basic intoned verse of the Saman chant.  From this seven vikriti
  3. ('alterations' or 'modifications') are realized.

  1. Various sources define these differently.  The following
  2. instruction is offerred for rulers for shaking the aggregate of
  3. the 'six enemies':  "restraint of the organs of sense, on
  4. which success in study and discipline depends, can be enforced by
  5. abandoning lust (kama), anger (krodha), greed (lobha), vanity
  6. (mana), infatuation (mada), and excessive pleasure (harsa)."
  7. [Kautiliya Arthashastra I.6.1]

  1. The terrible form of Shiva who takes pleasure in destruction

  1. ref. to tripura ('three cities'), the three principle regions
  2. of the world: svarga (heaven), akasha (space between heaven and
  3. earth) and prthvi (earth).  Having been overrun by the demons
  4. (asuras) the gods appealed to Shiva to destroy tripura.  For this
  5. purpose he armed himself: the earth became his chariot, the mountain
  6. Mandara his bow, and Vishnu his arrow.  All other beings of the
  7. worlds of the gods became parts of his chariot with Brahma as
  8. charioteer.  Thus Shiva destroyed tripura and all its inhabitants.
  9. [Mahabharata 8.24]

  1. As a result of an argument with Brahma, Shiva in the form of
  2. Bhairava cut off one of his five heads.  Brahma then cursed Shiva
  3. that he should beg for food while carrying his skull in his hand.
  4. [Shiva Purana 3.8]

  1. Shiva is sometimes represented holding a 'deer' in his hand.
  2. This symbolizes the peace and tranquility of the hermitage, the
  3. dwelling place of the ascetics and their wives of darukavana, the
  4. Pine Forest, referred to in the second line of verse.  Saranga
  5. however also means 'bow', and this interpretation is equally valid
  6. since it conforms to the alternating scheme of shruti and smriti.
  7. Saranga furthermore evokes the imagery of 'bow and arrow' which in
  8. shruti texts is associated with probing the 'inner consciousness':
  9. "Taking as bow the mighty weapon furnished by the Upanishads,
  10. fix on it the arrow rendered sharp by constant meditation.  And
  11. having drawn it with the mind absorbed in His thought, penetrate
  12. the mark, the imperishable Brahman." [Mundaka Upanishad
  13. II.3]

  1. The traditional location of the Pine Forest is considered to
  2. be in the vicinity of Chidambaram, Tanjore district.

  1. The lotus is the symbol of creation.  It is the source from
  2. which all beings originate.  It first grew from the navel of Vishnu
  3. and from this came forth Brahma.  As the same time the lotus is
  4. associated with Lakshmi, the consort of Vishnu, for she is the
  5. lotus goddess who worships at his feet.  The foot has therefore
  6. become symbolic of the highest object of worship.  Similarly with
  7. regard to the iconographical description of Shiva as the 'king of
  8. dancers' (nataraja), Heinrich Zimmer says "The fear-not gesture
  9. (abhaya-mudra), bestowing protection and peace... points downward
  10. to the uplifted foot.  This foot signifies Release and is the refuge
  11. and salvation (moksa) of the devotee.  It is to be worshipped for
  12. the attainment of union with the Absolute (Brahman)."

  1. The four goals of worldly existence: dharma (righteousness),
  2. artha (material wealth), kama (pleasure) and moksa (liberation)

  1. The five aspects of parama-Shiva; these are accordingly
  2. represented in their personal forms as the gods Brahma, Vishnu,
  3. Rudra, Aghora and Sadashiva

  1. ref. to Miradas Vaidyalinga Mudaliar, Dikshitar's patron

  1. In the context of this line the composer is referring to
  2. himself.

  1. Shiva is also nataraja (King of the dancers).  108 different
  2. varieties of dance are attributed to him.  Some of these are gentle
  3. and calm, others are fierce and terrible.  The anandanartanam
  4. referred to is the tandaya dance which is performed at the end of
  5. the cosmic cycle.

  1. ref. to the four phases of speech production;

Oh mind, meditate on Shri Somaskanda, seated under the mango tree.

He is eternal. He is uninterrupted Saccidananda. He has the lotus feet

captable of bestowing Samrajya.

He has an auspicious face, and lives in Kanchi, which is like the precious

gems Carbuncle-Manikya. His body's splendor surpasses that of Cupid.

One who destroyed the Antaka, his teeth are like jasmine buds. He has

the beautiful, tall bull as His vehicle, is Bhairavi's beloved, and stays in

the inner self of Guruguha. He manifests as Prithavilinga.
