Prayer from Rig Veda


ऋषि    :    गौतमॊ वामदॆव
दॆवता    :    अग्नि रुद्र
छन्दस्    :    त्रिष्टुप्

आ वॊ॒ राजा॑नमध्व॒रस्य॑ रु॒द्रं हॊता॑रं सत्य॒यजं॒ रॊद॑स्यॊः ।
अ॒ग्निं पु॒रा त॑नयि॒त्नॊर॒चित्ता॒ध्हिर॑ण्यरूप॒मव॑सॆ कृणुध्वम् ॥ ४.३.१ ॥

dEvatA    :    agni rudra
Chandas    :    triShTup

A vO rAjAnamadhvarasya rudraM hOtAraM satyayajaM rOdasyOH |
agniM purA tanayitnOrachittAdhhiraNyarUpamavasE kRuNudhvam || 4.3.1 ||

agniM purA tanayitnOr achittAt hiraNya rUpam avasE kRuNudhvam ||  )

Meaning of the Prayer Mantra:


 For your protection, before you fall down senseless as if struck by thunder,
seek the Grace of the Lord of the rites, the Rudra, the worshipped, 
the One sought by the worship with truth in the heaven and earth, 
the Agni, the One in the golden color!


 Notes: 


1. adhvarasya - for the rite; hOtA - one to worship; rOdasyOH - for the heaven and earth;
purA - before; tanayitnu - thundering; achittAt - senseless; hiraNya - golden; 
avas - protection; AkRuNudhvam - seek grace.

2. This Rig vedic hymn is also available as the Samagana. 
In the Samaveda this mantra is part of the rudra samhita.

3. This mantra advices the human beings to do the worship of Lord Shiva
before falling senseless or dead one day!
This concept is emphasized in many places in Thirumurais
c.f. படைகொள் கூற்றம் வந்து மெய்ப் பாசம் விட்ட போதின்கண்
   இடைகொள்வார் எமக்கிலை எழுக போது நெஞ்சமே - சம்பந்தர்

4.  satyayajaM 
One attained true the true worship.
c.f. பொய்யர் தம் பொய்யனை மெய்யர் மெய்யை - திருவாசகம்

5.  rOdasyOH  
Worshipped in the heaven and earth.
c.f. மண்பொருந்தி வாழ்பவர்க்கும் மாதீர்த்த வேதியர்க்கும்
   விண்பொருந்து தேவர்க்கும் வீடுபேறாய் நின்றானை - அப்பர்
