The Tula Purana says that Devi Ganga resides in Kaviri during the month of Tula / Aippasi (mid Oct – mid Nov). For this reason, our ancestors advised a dip in the Kaviri throughout the month of Aippasi especially on the last day of the month. On the last day of the month of Aippasi, bathing in the Kaviri is called 'Kadai Muzhukku' or ‘Last Dip’. This is celebrated in a grand manner in Mayuram. There is a special Tula Ghat on the Kaviri at Mayuram. On this day, the Panchamurtis from all the temples in Mayiladuthurai come to the Kaviri for the Theerthavari! On this occasion, thousands of devotees from all over Tamil Nadu come to Mayiladuthurai to bathe in the Kaviri and have a darshan of Lord Mayuranathar.
There was a resident of a village near Mayuram who had a crippled leg. He was eager to take a dip in the Kaviri on the day of the Kadai Muzhukku. So, he dragged himself with great difficulty. But he was able to reach the Tula ghat only on the day after the Kadai Muzhukku. Knowing the zeal with which he came, Devi Ganaga stayed a day longer in Kaviri to bless him. This day after Kadai Muzhukku, that is, the first day of the month of Karthika (Vrishchika), is known as 'Mudavan Muzhukku'.
