Tiruvaliyamudanar History

Tiruvaliyamudanar is one among the nine devotees who sung the divine Tiruvisaippa, the ninth Tirumurai. His compositions are a part of the seventh set in the Tiruvisaippa. Tiruvaliyamudanar was born as a Vaishnava Brahmin in Mayilai (Mayilapur in Chennai). There was a small state called Ali Nadu to the east of Sirkazhi. The capital of that state was the town Tiruvali. The name of Lord Vishnu in that town is Amudanar. As Tiruvaliyamudanar parents were ardent devotees of this deity, they named him thus. Though his family was a Vaishnava family, he developed a great love for Lord Shiva. He regularly worshiped the Lord of Tillai. This brave devotee realised the preciousness of the time and spent it in the bliss of worshiping Nataraja of Tillai.

He has composed many songs on the Dancing Lord. In those he refers to himself as “Mayilaiyar Mannavan”, “Mayilai Maraivala Ali”. (Some say that this Mayilai refers to Mayiladuturai). Some rock-cut inscriptions listing women who dedicated themselves to the service of the Lord at the Tanjai temple have names like “Edutha Padam”, “Mazhalai Silambu'' which are the phrases used in his fifth song in the third padikam. Thus, it is understood that his period was before king Rajaraja (i.e before 985 CE). There are four padikam-s that were composed by him which are part of Tiruvisaippa all praising the Lord of Tillai.
