Kallatar History

Kallata Deva Nayanar is one among the twelve devotees who sung the divine Padinoran Tirumurai, the eleventh Tirumurai. There have been many poets by the name Kallatar referred to in history. Some say that whatever is present in the Tirumurai should be attributed to a different Kallatar than the one who lived during the sangam period, before the common era. The Kallatar who lived in the sangam period has written many songs in sangam literature. There is one composition written by Kallatar present in the eleventh Tirumurai which is Tirukkannappa Devar Tirumaram.

There is a book titled Kallatam also written by a devotee by name Kallatar. This literature, using the love story as a backdrop, praises the glory of the Lord Shiva like Tirukkovaiyar. While the headings Tirukkovaiyar has (400) is a superset of those found in Kalladam. This work is rich in vocabulary and is very similar to the language used in the sangam literature.
