Meaning of Thevaram
mangaiyarkkarasi, the daughter of choza king,
the lady adorned with nice bangles, like the
wealthy one on the lotus (thirumagaL - lakshmi),
the queen of the pANDiya empire serves and worships
the Lord everyday. Accepting that, the One whose form
is that of splendid flame, the Lord of elements
blessing with four vedhas and their meanings and
elaboration, sitting with the beautiful fish like
(long) eyed lady, that thiruvAlavAy (madhurai) is
this one !
Notes
1. sambandhar was invited by the pANDiya queen
mangaiyakkarasiyAr and the chief minister
kulachchiRaiyAr. On their invitation sambandhar
arrives at the border of madhurai where he is welcomed
by kulachhciRaiyAr. Getting down from the palanquin,
nyAnachambandhar looks at madhurai the holy town
of Lord chokka nAthar. Saluting that great abode
worshipped by the highly devoted queen and minister
in spite of the intolerance of the jainism that was
ruling, sambandhar sings this padhikam that came to
awaken the pANDiya kingdom.
2. sambandhar has praised the services of
mangaiyarkkarasiyAr and kulachchiRaiyAr in alternate
songs throughout this padhikam and in the last one
referred both. This itself is an indication of their
glory ! The chief minister whose duty is to advice
the king in the right direction was very concerned
on the improper way the king and the kingdom were
going to and was trying hard to do the course
correction. The queen on the other hand stood really
to the meaning of her name - the queen of all womenfolk !
Wife is called "vAzkkaith thuNaivi". The duty of the
spouse is not just to accept and live with the loved
one, but should be able to guide, encourage as well as
correct when required the life companion to the right
path. That way the queen was the women behind the
success that made "kUnpANDiyan" a "ninRa chIr neDumARan"
and the pANDiya kingdom shaine with the glory of
holy ash. If sambandhar was the light that drove away
the darkness from that southern kingdom, the minister
and the queen were the pillar and the lamp that hosted
the light. They stand for our gratitude and praise !
