Meaning:
Over the aged matted-hair, He has the tender young crescent;
Single hooded snake, He wore around the waist;
The Perfect One free of wrath (filth); The Lord of
thiru AppanUr - those who have the mind to hold on to Him,
would cut off the bonds with deeds (vinai / karma).
Notes:
1. The poet plays with thamiz here. The Lord is beginningless,
so the hair is aged and it is "muRRuny chaDai". The color of
the matted hair is brown - the color of the riped out things,
so it is "muRRuny chaDaimuDi". As a contradiction the moon
gets to grow only on getting the refuge in His matted hair.
So it is still budding and tender - mudhirA iLampiRai.
2. oRRaip paDavaravam .. - He has a one hooded snake around the
waist / He has only a snake around His waist !
(c.f. aRRam maRaippadhu un paNiyE - camban^dhar).
3. ceRRam - wrath - ego - and hence the prime filth. God is
beyond the threefold filths. God is also wrathless. How could
it be, when the purANas describe fierce God on wrong doers ?
The answer lies in the question, "Does God get pleased with the
worship ?" If the God gets pleasure by the worship Its source
of pleasure is external and hence It cannot be ever blissful.
So like the way the Formless Supreme appears in various forms for
the pashus to worship, It acts as if It is pleased or as if It
is fierce to us, but actually It is ever in bliss.
4. thiru AppanUr - abode inside madhurai on the banks of vaigai
called thiru AppuDaiyAr kOyil.
5. arai - waist.
