Meaning of Thevaram
Even if the One in pazanam - filled with the noise of the
cotton feather and legged swans, Who deceived me making
me loose my bangles, will not come, Oh the One having the
Feet that is the flower for the head of appUdhi, the one
who grows (ritual) fire that threatens, drives and weakens
the kali, make the lines join !
(Meaning extract:
Even if the Lord of pazanam, Who deceived me making
me loose my bangles, will not come, Oh the One having the
Feet that is the flower for the head of appUdhi, make the
lines join ! (to make the circle) )
Notes
1. This is one of the lively agathuRai padhikams of
thirun^Avukkarasar. It is an old custom to draw a circle
with the eyes closed, to find out whether the beloved one
will come (back). If the lines meet to form the circle
the lover will return back to her else will not is the
belief.
The lady being sung in this song is loving so much
our God that she cannot tolerate even the thought that
He will not come to her ! He is the Supreme God, so what ?
He is the One Who occupied her mind, made her go lean
making her bangles go out of her hands. Now the feeling
that that Lord will not come to her is not something
tolerable. So she pleads to God, "Even if my sweet Lord
will not come please join the lines, so that I will
live off just in the sweet memory that He would come
sometime."
2. In this song appar sings the glory of the great
devotee appUdhi aDikaLAr, who lived with unmatched
devotion to saint thirun^Avukkarasar.
3. kali - kali purushan/ evil; azal - fire; kunychi
- hair on the head; iyai - join.
