Meaning of Sundarar Tiruppattu

I am unaware of the ways to worship You.
Nor did I pursue you earlier.
Eventhough thinking day and night,
I do not think in the accomplishing way.
The non-withdrawing waterflow eating areca,
the sugar engines under the cluster of coconuts
making noise - Oh Reverend of such thiruvaiyARRuk
kAvirik kOTTam !

Notes

1. chEramAn perumaL and cundharar on their
pilgrimage came near thiruvaiyARu from
thirukkaNDiyUr. The river kAviri was flooding,
how would they cross the river to salute their beloved
Lord of thiruvaiyARu ? cundharar sang this song
which had the flood of devotion more than that flowed
on the kAviri. He cries, "As an ignorant I do not know
how to properly worship You, nor is my devotion a
fulfilling one." The Lord Who fought in the court to get
cundharar to keep singing Him, made a path appear in
the middle of flooding kAviri, through which the devout
friends came and worshipped the Supreme.
(c.f. unnai van^dhippadhOr n^eRiyaRiyEn
n^innaiyE aRiyEn n^innai aRiyumOr aRivaRiyEn
- thiruvAcakam)
2. When the flood of senses obstructing the way,
if one sings this song, won't the mArgabhandhu
bless the way ?
3. Especially the phrase "aiyARuDaiya aDikaLO" in
this all through stimulating song sets the mind calling
out to the Lord.
4. paricu - manner/procedure; paNDu - early;
payilal - practicing; kamugu - areca (pAkku);
karuppAlai - sugar factory; aravam - noice;
aDigaL - reverend/saint.
