Meaning of the Prayer Song:

 Dwelling place is the whole world;
In every town those who cook their food
(household people) give before they eat;
They do not refuse alms;
Shelter is the public inns;
Mother earth does not roll down those lying;
No falsehood, truly - the One with combative bull has accepted (us)!
We do not have any deficiency!
We got rid of the hurdles;
What would bind us, who are free from fault,
to listen to those who wander clad in nice dresses and
decked with gold!

 Notes:

1. attu - cook; aiyam - alms; ambalam - public place;
ikal - enmity; thurisu - fault.
2. This padhikam was sung by Thirunavukarasar,
when the Pallava emperor sent summon to the saint
to appear in his court. That emperor (mahendravarma)
ruled the huge part southern peninsula and our saint
was lonely facing it. Our saint had the backing of the Supreme!
Why would he fear? His befitting response came as this padhikam!
Those who have powerful weapons are not the powerful;
Those who have a huge empire are not the powerful;
It is indeed those who align themselves with the Supreme Shiva
- those are the most powerful!
3. In a different sense this padhikam and especially this song
reflects the state of a pure renounced saint!
4. attuNpAr ittuNpAr
aTTunbAr - Those who cook their food. Household people - Gruhastas.
These people who lead the family life are the people
who are duty bound to support those in the other walks
of life - bachelors and renounced. They should feed these
two and guests before they eat their food!
(This is an excellent support system for those who are
in the spiritual duty or in the learning phase or for the travelers.
Today how many feed these people before they eat?!)
5. iniyEthum kuRaivilOm
This is the abundance mentality as against the
scarcity mentality of greedy world. Chamaka in Vedas
emphasize this abundance mentality for those who
worship the Supreme. The people with this abundance
mentality feel fulfilled even if they are seen less rich by the
world. Those with scarcity mentality will feel depressed
even if they have huge wealth.
