Meaning of the Prayer Song:
You are dancing!
The great vedins tender the offerings that is not reduced in quantity;
I have realized You!
Tumburu and Narada sing;
Divines and the king of divines hail;
Vishnu and Brahma seek;
Parvati and Ganga cuddle;
(Amonst all these) Will the petty service that
I, the dog like devotee, do find any place?
Do You have any shortfall at all,
oh the One taken abode at Thiruvarur!
Notes:
1. Everyone is in the queue to provide the best of the service
they could offer to the Lord - starting from Parvati, Ganga, Vishnu, Brahma,
Indra, all divines, sages, vedins and a huge set of vivid devotees.
Appar in his own special humbleness asks the Lord Shiva,
"Oh Lord, among so much of crowd who offer their excellent
service to You, the petty little service that I could will be so
insignificant. Where will it find its place with You? After all do You
have a need for one?!"
This is an enchanting song highlighting both the humblesness of Vagisar,
as well as the state of the Lord Shiva that all we offer to the Lord is
for our own satisfaction and the God Himself has no need for anything
from anyone. He is Svatmarama - enjoys in Himself than anything/anyone else!
2. அளவிற் குன்றா அவியடுவார்
The Havis that is offered in the yagnas has specific quantity mentioned.
It has to be given in that proportion. This is a rule for the Yagna.
Appar highlights such subtleties of the Vedic worship in his padhikams.
The Lord Shiva, Who accepts the havis through the agni in the yagnas,
accept the offerings as Shivalinga in the temples. That is the reason
there is a saying, "சொக்கனுக்குச் சட்டி அளவு." (There is a size of the bowl
for Chokkan - Lord Sundareshwara)
