अग्निं प्रकृत्य खलु रुद्रपदं प्रयुङ्क्ते

      तद्ब्राह्मणं भवति यत्र तयोस्स्हूतिः |

आह्वानमत्र भवतः पृथगेव दृष्टं

      यत्प्रारग्निमिति सूक्तविदः पठन्ति || २३ ||

agniM prakRutya khalu rudrapadaM prayu~gktE
        tadbrAhmaNaM bhavati yatra tayOssahUtiH |
AhvAnamatra bhavataH pRuthagEva dRuShTaM 
        yatprAtaragnimiti sUktavidaH paThanti || 23 ||

        tat brAhmaNaM bhavati yatra tayOH sahUtiH |
AhvAnam atra bhavataH pRuthagEva dRuShTaM

Meaning of the Prayer Song:


 

 When Rudra is invoked along with any, there indeed the

Rudra refer to the Agni. There is a statement to that effect available.

Whenever You are invoked, it is seen to be always alone.

This is read from the Sukta "Prataragnim".

 

 Notes:


 
1. khalu - indeed; prayu~gte - used; sahUti - united invocation; AhvAnam - invitation;
pRuthageva - alone.

 
2. God Shiva is always invoked in the vedas uniquely and specially.
There are places where the rudra word is used with other divinities.
In those places rudra refers to Agni.
