Do You Know Anything Darker than Darkness?

Prayer of the Day

Prayer from Thiruvarutpayan (திருவருட்பயன்)

இருள்மல நிலை

ஒருபொருளும் காட்டாது இருள்; உருவம் காட்டும்;
இருபொருளும் காட்டாது இது.   23

Song as Romanized text

iruLmala n-ilai

oruporuLum kAttAthu iruL; uruvam kAttum;
iruporuLum kAddAthu ithu.   23

Meaning of the Prayer Song:

 The darkness would not show anything;
But it will show itself.
This (Anava) shows neither.

 Notes:

1. In darkness one cannot see anything. However,
one can realize that it is dark and hence nothing can be seen.

However, the veil of the darkness (Anava)
that is inherent in the souls is worse.
It neither reveals the real nature of things,
making people mistake the aberration
as the reality. The worst part is that it is not even
apparent to the people that they are under the veil of
this darkness - for them to even make an attempt to
get out of it!

How powerful is this darkness that has occupied us!

Lord Shiva is the remover of this veil of darkness.
Hence He is called Hara - the remover.
It is interesting to note that the Sivagnanabodham
uses the word hara than shiva to refer to the Supreme.
