Did We Contract Darkness Sometime?

Prayer of the Day

Prayer from Thiruvarutpayan (திருவருட்பயன்)

இருள்மல நிலை

ஆசாதியேல் அணைவ காரணம் என் முத்திநிலை
பேசாது அகவும் பிணி   28

Song as Romanized text

iruLmala n-ilai

Asu AthiyEl aNaiva kAraNam en muththin-ilai
pEsAthu akavum piNi   28

Meaning of the Prayer Song:

If the filth has an origin, what is the reason for it to catch (the soul)?
(Further) even after liberation, the bondage (filth) could again capture.

 Notes:

1. In the previous song of Thiruvarutpayan it was
established that the third object - the filth or veil of darkness or bondage - has to exist,
as neither God inflicts misery on the soul nor is the misery nature of the soul.

2. Now some philosophies argue that this veil of darkness on the soul
has an origin i.e. came in between. If it captures the soul somewhere in between,
there should be a reason why it captured the soul suddenly? If it captures for
no reason, what is the guarantee that it will not capture again the soul
even after the soul gets liberated? In that case even the liberation becomes
a temporary state, where the soul could be subjected to the veil of darkness
any time again. If that is the case, what is the point in even striving for liberation?

So, it could be deduced that the association of filth with the soul is beyond
a beginning, not something that came in between. Hence, after the soul is liberated
it never again gets subjected to this darkness again.

3. c.f. "na ca punarAvartatE, na ca punarAvartatE"
(He never comes again, He never comes again.)
