Meaning of the Prayer Song:

When the Thiruvannamalai of the Lord, Who is Ashta Murthi,
Who wanders around gladly begging at many homes riding a stray bull,
is saluted with folded hands the karma will ruin, there would be no misery.

 Notes:

1. paTTi ERu - stray bull; uzi tharal - wander.

Why did Appar call the vehicle of Lord Shiva as stray bull?
The Rishabham of Lord Shiva is not like any other domesticated bull.
It is in fact the Dharma itself in the form of bull. Dharma is not
controlled by any of us (except the Lord Himself, Who has that controlled as His vehicle),
but rather that controls all of us. Hence that is not a domestic bull
like any other bull.

This glory is poetically highlighted in the song by Karaikkal Ammaiyar,
where she says, when Lord Shiva got married He could not even find an
equivalent bull for Uma and hence He takes Her always along on the same bull!
The irony in the song tells us how glorious and unique is the bull of the Lord Shiva!

3. Ashta Murthi
