Punnai (Poon Tree)

திருப்புனவாயில், திருப்பல்லவனீச்சுரம் , திருநாரையூர், திருச்சுழியல் (திருச்சுழி) , திருவலிவலம் , திருப்புகலூர், திருப்புகலூர் வர்த்தமானீச்சரம் திருமயிலாப்பூர், திருவெண்ணெய்நல்லூர், திருவேட்டக்குடி, திருப்புறம்பயம், திருஅம்பர் பெருந்திருக்கோயில், திருநெல்வெண்ணெய், திருஇரும்பைமாகாளம் முதலிய சிவத்தலங்களில் புன்னை தலமரமாக விளங்குகிறது. அவற்றுள் திருப்பல்லவனீச்சுரம், திருநெல்வெண்ணெய், திருவேட்டக்குடி தலங்களில் இம்மரம் தற்போது இல்லை. திருவேட்டக்குடியில் சிவபிரானை “நறையுலவும் பொழிற்புன்னை நன்னிழற்கீழமரும் இறை” என தேவாரம் குறிப்பிடுகிறது. இம்மரம் தமிழகத்தின் கடற்கரைகளிலும், ஆற்றங்கரைகளிலும் தானே வளரும் இயல்பினது. இதன் இலை சற்று நீண்டதாகவும், பளப்பளப்பாகவும் இருக்கும், உருண்டையான உள்ஓடுள்ள சதைக்கனியை உடையது. இதன் இலை, பூ, விதை, பட்டை, நெய் ஆகியவை மருத்துவப் பயன் உடையது.

தாது அழுகல் போக்கியாகவும், உடல் இசிவு நீக்கியாகவும், நாடி நடையை உயர்த்தி உடல் வெப்பு தரும் மருந்தாகவும் பயன்படும். தோல் நோய்க்குச் சிறந்த மருந்தாகும்.

Description	Sultan Champa is a beautiful large evergreen tree native to southern coastal India, East Africa, Malaysia and Australia. It is a low-branching and slow-growing tree with a broad and irregular crown. It usually reaches 8 to 20 m in height. The tree supports a dense canopy of glossy, elliptical leaves. The very fragrant white flowers are 25 mm across and occur in racemose or paniculate inflorescences consisting of 4 to 15 flowers. The flowers have snow-white petals with a thick center of yellow stamens. The fragrant flowers have been prized as an adornment and as a perfume. The fruit (the ballnut) is a round, green drupe reaching 2 to 4 cm in diameter and having a single large seed. When ripe, the fruit is wrinkled and its color varies from yellow to brownish-red. This tree often grows in coastal regions as well as nearby lowland forests. However it has also been cultivated successfully in inland areas at moderate altitudes.
