காரைக்கால் அம்மையார் அருளிய - மூத்த திருப்பதிகம் பதினோராம் திருமுறை. திருச்சிற்றம்பலம் ஒப்பினை இல்லவன் பேய்கள்கூடி ஒன்றினை ஒன்றடித் தொக்கலித்துப் பப்பினை யிட்டுப் பகண்டை யாடப் பாடிருந் தந்நரி யாழ்அமைப்ப அப்பனை அணிதிரு ஆலங்காட்டுள் அடிகளைச் செடிதலைக் காரைக்காற்பேய் செப்பிய செந்தமிழ் பத்தும்வல்லார் சிவகதி சேர்ந்தின்பம் எய்துவாரே. திருச்சிற்றம்பலம்

kAraikkAl ammaiyAr aruLiyadhu paN : n^aTTapADai padhinORAm thirumuRai mUththa thiruppadhikam thiruchchiRRambalam oppinai illa van pEygaL kUDi onRinai onRu aDiththu okkaliththup pappinaiyiTTup pagaNDai pADap pADun^dhan^ n^ari yAz amaippa appanai aNi thiruvAlaN^kATTuL aDikaLaic ceDithalaik kAraikkARpEy ceppiya cen^thamiz paththum vallAr civagadhi cErn^dhu inbam eydhuvArE thiruchchiRRambalam Meaning: The unequalled gruesome ghosts beating one another and shouting together, the birds (of the cremation ground) singing, fox making the sound of the string instrument yAz, the Lord dances at thiruvAlaN^kADu. On that Lord, whoever sings these ten songs said by the ghost of kAraikkAl, they would get to civagadhi and enjoy the bliss. Notes: 1. kAraikkAl ammaiyAr was the first one to compose hymns in the style of padhikam. It became very popular through thEvAram authors. She also signed all the compositions with kaDaikkAppu - referring to herself as the "pEy of kAraikkAl" and also mentioning the benefits one get by hailing God through these hymns. As these compositions of ammaiyAr pioneered this type of songs, they are called "mUththa thiruppadhikam". This verse is a kaDaikkAppu from one of the thiruvAlaN^kATTu mUththa thiruppadhikam. 2. okkaliththu - okkak kaliththu - shouting together; pagaNDai - a bird.
